FINLAND: Streetart Oulu – Northern Finnish Urban Creations – Reformi Art Space

Oulu has around 210,000 inhabitants and is the largest city in northern Finland, as well as a student center. The university is the second largest in the country outside the greater Helsinki area. Oulu is famous for the annual air guitar world championship, the Mieskuoro Huutajat. The Qstock rock festival has taken place every July since 2003 and Oulu has been chosen as European Capital of Culture for 2026. Of course you can find great urban creations in the streets, especially the REFORMI art space at Pikisaarentie 15 in the Pikisaari neighborhood is filled with awesome artworks inside and outside. These great photos of urban art in the Finish city of Oulu were taken by the world explorers Thomas Adventurer and Diana Beekvelt, also known as NOMADS ON WHEELS. They have been traveling around Scandinavia with their VW LT28 van at that time. You can check their website, Instagram, Facebook or Youtube to see where they are currently around and follow their exciting adventures. It’s definitely worth taking a look! And in between their drivings around the globe they encounter a lot of beautiful streetart.

“Toripolliisi”  by  KAARLO MIKKONEN

The Toripolliisi, or in English “Market Policeman”, is a 2.20 meter high bronze statue in the market square of Oulu and it depicts a corpulent police officer. The urban artwork was designed by the artist KAARLO MIKKONEN, who lived from 1920 to 2001. The statue, which has now become a landmark, was financed by donations from citizens and was inaugurated in 1987. The Toripolliisi is dedicated to police officers who used to maintain order and peace in the Oulu market square.
