COLOMBIA: Legendary Sculptor and Progressive Artist – FERNANDO BOTERO – Rest in Peace – Memorandum Page

The Colombian artist FERNANDO BOTERO is famous for his strangely shaped sculptures and figures. Pot-bellied and blown-up statues, which he put during his life time all around the world as monuments or on his fantastic paintings. During the years he developed an interesting unique style and is one of the most important art creators from South America of recent times. He died on 15th September in 2023 at the age of 91. Most of his art objects can be seen throughout the South American continent, especially in Colombia, his home place. With this page we want to dedicate a memorandum and respect for his magnificent works. The collection has been started with photos of artworks that we have photographed, but anyone else can also send us photos of artworks by BOTERO to info@vagabundler.com and we will add them to the collection. As long as the creations are still seen and memorized, the artist and his doings will never get forgotten.

“Abu Ghraib”  –  Painting  –  Santiago  –  Chile

The Center for Latin American Studies at Berkeley helped facilitate the display of Fernando Botero’s “Abu Ghraib” collection at the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in Santiago, Chile. The paintings and drawings were donated to Berkeley after the first showing at a public institution in the United States was arranged by the Center on the Berkeley campus in 2007. This video highlights the exhibition and includes footage from the opening ceremony.

In 2003, the press published reports uncovering numerous human rights violations by US military and intelligence personnel against detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The shocking accounts and images of torture at the prison inspired the internationally acclaimed Colombian artist Fernando Botero (born 1932) to produce the torrent of powerful paintings and drawings that became his Abu Ghraib series. These graphic and compelling images of detention and imminent physical and psychological threat are still charged with the memory of horrifying prisoner abuse.
