CHILE: Streetart Valparaíso – Stencil Collection – Artworks throughout the City – Main Page

In the 19th century, before the Panama Canal existed, Valparaiso was a vital port for trade between Europe and Asia. It was a cosmopolitan port, where British travelers to Australia and New Zealand used Valparaiso as a starting point for the long final journey to Oceania. As an example of that international atmosphere, Chris Watson, Australia’s third Prime Minister from 1904, was born in Valparaiso in 1867. One of the most emblematic places of Valparaiso’s cosmopolitan and bohemian era was Templeman Street. That’s why the stencil “El Templeman”, featuring Chilean figures such as Gabriela Mistral, Salvador Allende, Pablo Neruda and others, can be found in the „Politics“ category of this presentation of stencils made in Valparaiso during Chile’s pre-bicentennial era, that is, these stencils were created before 18th September 2010.

The stencils are grouped into several categories like „Nature“, „Portraits“ or „Politics“, featuring stencils of Stalin, Allende, Che Guevara, and Pope John Paul II among others. The Art section includes stencils of Salvador Dali, and works of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. There is also a stencil by EDUARDO MENA, a local artist who died in 2021. There are also several stencils by ENAIRES and also colorful stencils. Another group of stencils features characters and scenes from movies and comics of different eras, from Popeye the Sailor to a character from The Simpson. It also groups musicians, there are two stencils of Elvis Presley, and others where you can distinguish Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, and Madonna. There is a stencil of Soda Stereo, an Argentinean rock band. At the end, a group of stencils with messages against TV.

Another group of stencils features a variety of themes, styles and ideas that defy easy categorization. There are stencils of flowers and butterflies, stencils throughout the stairs of Valparaiso. You can see stencils of ostriches, a couple kissing each other and much more. This immense variety reflects the styles and trends found on the City of Valparaiso. Below you can find the several subtopics, just click on the photo or the link and you will get to the stencil artworks of that category.
