Opus 74 – Olympic Games 1976
This ceramic work was created and installed the year of the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. The artist JEAN-PAUL MOUSSEAU wanted to represent the Olympic flame using yellow ceramic on a blue background. The very successful lighting effects on the work were designed taking into account the presence of skylights present in the architecture of the station. The Quebec painter and multidisciplinary artist, JEAN-PAUL MOUSSEAU was a student of PAUL-ÉMILE BORDUAS. Close to the automatist movement, he put his signature on the Manifesto of Global Refusal. He is among the artists who worked to open Quebec society towards modernity and he attaches great importance to the integration of works of art into the urban environment. During the 1970s, he became the second artistic director of the Montreal Metro. From that moment on, he worked to integrate non-figurative works of art into the Metro network. Its legacy, as such, is still very present today in the underground transport network. – Patrice Loranger
