Bâtiment 7 or Building 7 is a disused factory that was to be converted into luxury apartments by a developer. This would have contributed to the gentrification of the modest district of Pointe-Saint-Charles. The people and organizations of the district mobilized and led a fight against this project. After months of fighting, the city agreed to buy the building from the private developer and sell it for a symbolic dollar to the coalition that had formed. Since that time, the building has been self-managed. Progressive renovations and decontamination take place to make parts of the building and the surrounding land usable. Various workshops were born allowing the people of the district to have access to spaces, tools and machines to carry out projects and learn techniques aimed at autonomy through knowledge. An organic and fair trade market has also been established as well as an excellent microbrewery, one of my favorites in Montreal, Les Sans-Taverne. A real beautiful project of the social left in action. Here you can find the great artworks at this space sorted by artists. – Patrice Loranger
