Monument to the children killed during the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992 till 1995
This artwork, known to locals as „Granata,“ was created by local artist Mensud Kečo and inaugurated on 9th May 2009. It comprises several symbolic elements, including a bronze ring approximately ten meters in diameter, a central glass sculpture, water, and elements bearing the names of the children who were killed. The artist describes the glass sculpture as, among other things, a mother and child, a frozen flame, an unfinished sandcastle, and something that serves as an immediate reminder of a childhood cut short. The water, meanwhile, symbolizes life and purity.

The name „Granata“ stems from the fact that the bronze for the large ring was made from melted-down shell and grenade casings that had been fired at Sarajevo or found within the city during the war. According to the City of Sarajevo, more than nine tons of shell and grenade casings were melted down for this purpose. During our visit, we encountered the artist and his children as they were restoring the artwork and refreshing the bronze ring with a special molten wax-metal coating.
