Tribute to Djuro Djaković
Đuro Đaković was born on 30th November 1886 in Brodski Varoš near Slavonski Brod and was a Croatian metalworker, trade unionist, and communist politician who spent an important part of his life in Sarajevo. From an early age, he became involved in workers’ rights and participated in strikes and the emerging labor movement in Bosnia. He later became one of the leading figures of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. Because of his opposition to the dictatorship of King Alexander I, Đaković was arrested in 1929 and killed shortly afterwards on 25th April that year in Oštri Vrh near Sveti Duh, today Slovenia.
A monument in Sarajevo commemorates his importance to the workers’ movement. Created by LJUBOMIR DENKOVIČ, the sculpture was unveiled in 1973. Made of white Aranđelovac marble, it depicts Đaković seemingly emerging from the stone. Today, the monument stands at „Trg Prvog Korpusa Armije RBiH“, the „Square of the First Corps of the Army of the Republic Bosnia and Herzegovina“, serving as a reminder of the history of the workers’ movement in Sarajevo.
