Pope John Paul II
In front of the “Sacred Heart Cathedral” in Sarajevo stands a nearly three-metre-high, silver-colored statue of Pope John Paul II. It commemorates his historic journey to Sarajevo on 12th April 1997, when he visited the people of the city after the Bosnian War and called strongly for peace, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence. The location of the monument was deliberately chosen because John Paul II greeted and blessed the people here during his visit.
The statue was officially unveiled and blessed on 30th April 2014, exactly 17 years after his visit. The idea for a monument had already emerged in 2007 and was supported, among others, by the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna and the Croatian cultural society Napredak. The sculpture was created by the Croatian sculptor HRVOJE URUMOVIČ, who was born in Sarajevo, with the support of ZVONIMIR KRZNARIČ, who meanwhile passed away in 2011. The figure is almost three metres tall, made of Silumin, an aluminium alloy, and weighs around 300 kilograms. This gives it its distinctive silver-colored surface.
John Paul II is depicted with his head slightly lowered and holding his shepherd’s staff. His calm and thoughtful posture conveys humility and reflection. The monument therefore not only commemorates the Pope and his visit, but above all symbolizes his message of peace, hope, and reconciliation. Especially in multicultural Sarajevo, the statue remains a symbol of dialogue between the city’s different religious and social communities.
