Le Refus Global
These murals are great pieces of urban art that are replicated on each side of the pedestrian lane form a small square in homage to Paul-Émile Borduas, one of the great modern painters in the history of Quebec. They refer to a manifesto that was published in Quebec by a group of intellectuals including several artists like Paul-Émile Borduas who is the main author of „Le Manifeste du Refus Global“. In 1948, Quebec society was sclerotic. The church ally with a conservative political party has reigned in Quebec for several decades. Artists and intellectuals perceive this confinement of ideas and mentalities more acutely than the other constituents of society. „Le Manifeste du Refus Global“ criticizes this situation and proposes another model of society. Borduas, questions traditional values such as Catholicism and ancestral values and rejects social immobility. It offers an opening onto universal thought which would allow one to escape moral constraints and religious dogmas so that the individual freedom essential to change and creation can flourish.
The manifesto was obviously very badly received by the reactionary press and the authorities. The author Borduas was considered radical and anarchist while he aimed to observe the decay of Christian civilization. It was unknown to the masses when it was released and had very little impact. Borduas lost his teaching job and had to go into exile for a few years in the United States. However, a decade later, it was becoming a founding text of the renewal in Quebec and the social democrats seized it by making Borduas a national hero. Some of the illustrious signatories you also can see on the mural artwork are painter Paul-Émile Borduas, painter and sculptor Marcel Barbeau, painter Marcelle Ferron, poet and playwright Claude Gauvreau, painter, engraver and sculptor Jean-Paul Riopelle and dancer and choreographer Françoise Sullivan. – Patrice Loranger
