Bia?ystok is the capital and only major metropolis of the Polish Podlaskie Voivodeship. Throughout its history it has been a multilingual and culturally diverse city, as evidenced by the bright and colorful urban art on the walls of the houses that combine modern techniques with historical memories. The Bia?ystok region was in the 19th and 20th centuries a center of engineering, where electrical, metal and beer industries flourished. It is located on the „Rail Baltica“ railway line from Warsaw towards Kaunas and Vilnius in Lithuania.
The city is located around 180 km north-east of the Polish state capital of Warsaw near the Belarusian border on the small river Bia?a, which flows into the Supra?l in the north-west of the city, which in turn flows into the Narew a few kilometers to the west.
If you visit it’s worth seeing the Baroque town hall („barokowy ratusz miejski“), the Branicki Palace („Pa?ac Branickich“), which is today the Medical University, the cathedral ensemble from the 16th century with magnificent furnishings and the cathedral built in neo-Gothic style from the years 1904 to 1915, which contains numerous works of art.
Churches worth seeing are the orthodox St. Nicholas Cathedral and the Hagia Sophia. Two hundred meters east of the cathedral is the Army Museum („Muzeum Wojska w Bia?ymstoku“). It is an archive of Polish military history and the largest war museum in Podlaskie. Also of interest are the Nowik Palace built in 1912, the Podlaskie Opera and the Philharmonic Hall from 2012.
