Tribute to Mustafa Hajrulahović aka Talijan
Mustafa Hajrulahović, also known as “Talijan”, was born on 22nd January 1957 and was a Bosnian military commander and one of the key figures in the defense of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. After leaving the Yugoslav Army, he joined the Bosnian Patriotska Liga and, in September 1992, became the first commander of the 1st Corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which played a major role in defending Sarajevo during the siege. He became a symbolic figure of the city’s resistance and defense. His nickname “Talijan,” meaning “the Italian,” was connected to his ties to Italy and military training he received there. Hajrulahović died of a heart attack in Hamburg on 8th March 1998, at the age of 41. He is still remembered in Sarajevo as one of the city’s important defenders.
