„Shedding the Veils“ – „Migrants Journey“
Ethiopian migrants walk for hours through a sandstorm and excruciating heat along a roadside in Lahj, Yemen, July 2019. Some travel without sandals, carrying little or no water. Many Ethiopian migrants endure a dangerous journey across the narrow strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, packed into overcrowded wooden smuggling boats. Upon ar- rival in Yemen, traffickers often transport them to makeshift compounds in remote desert areas near the coastal village of Ras al-Ara. Those who manage to escape continue on foot, walking for days or weeks across harsh terrain in the hope of reaching Saudi Arabia in search of work and a better future. The journey is one of the world’s least visible migration routes, marked by exploitation, violence, and uncertainty. – WARM Foundation
