Multikulturalni Čovjek – Multicultural Man

The „Multikulturalni Čovjek“, or in English the “Multicultural Man”, located at Trg Oslobođenja, the Liberation Square, is a sculpture by the Italian artist FRANCESCO PERILLI and is one of Sarajevo’s most famous works of art. It was erected in 1997 as a gift from the Italian government and symbolizes the diversity of cultures, religions, and ethnic groups that have shaped the city for centuries.

The figure consists of intertwined human forms and represents solidarity, tolerance, and the peaceful coexistence of different communities. Especially in Sarajevo, a city shaped by cultural diversity but also by the aftermath of the Bosnian War, this artwork holds special significance and serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and mutual respect.

The sculpture is part of a global project by the artist, who created several other monumental versions of it that now stand on different continents, including in Toronto, Sarajevo, Changchun, and East London. In this way, the artwork symbolically connects different cultures and places, conveying its message of understanding and coexistence across borders.
