The „Sarajevo Roses“, or in Bosnian „Sarajevske Ruže“, are one of the most poignant and, at the same time, most unassuming war memorials in Europe. They are impact craters left by mortar shells in asphalt or concrete, which were filled with red synthetic resin or red paint after the war. The red symbolizes the blood shed by the people who lost their lives at these sites. They serve as a reminder of the Siege of Sarajevo, which lasted from 5th April 1992, to 29th February 1996, a total of 1,425 days. During this time, the city was bombarded almost continuously with artillery and mortars from the surrounding mountains. Thousands of civilians were killed or injured.

The name “Rose” comes from the shape of the impact patterns: when a shell explodes on asphalt or concrete, it creates radial cracks that resemble flower petals. After the war ended, these craters were filled with red paint at selected locations, thus becoming memorials. It is often stated that a site was designated a Sarajevo Rose if at least three people died there as a result of a single impact, although this practice is not always consistently documented in individual cases. Particularly well-known Sarajevo Roses are located around the Markale Market. In 1994 and 1995, two devastating shelling attacks took place there on the bustling market, killing numerous civilians. The red markings serve as a reminder of these events to this day.

One remarkable aspect is their subtlety: Most Sarajevo Roses do not have explanatory plaques or inscriptions. Passersby often don’t notice them until they take a second look. They are part of the everyday street scene and literally make memory an integral part of public space. Many of these markings still exist today, though over the years some have disappeared or faded due to street renovations. Citizen initiatives and local organizations are working to preserve or restore the remaining Sarajevo Roses.

Many visitors report that they first had to learn what these red patterns signify, and that this fundamentally changed their perspective on Sarajevo. The city appears vibrant and modern, yet the Sarajevo Roses serve as a reminder of the war not through monumental structures, but through the scars that remain visible in the pavement.
