Site of Gwangju Students Independence Movement

This is the place where Gwangju Secondary School students led the students‘ independence movement in Gwangju in 1929. The Gwangju Students Independence Movement was ignited from the clashes between Korean and Japanese students at Naju Station on October 30th in 1929, and at Gwangju Station on November 3rd. On November 3rd and 12th in 1929, Gwanju Secondary School students went to the streets with other students from Gwangju Girls‘ Secondary School, Gwangju Agricultural School, and Jeonnam School of Education to protest against the abolition of colonial education and st independence of Korea. The students‘ collective power of anti-Japan protests since Marc First Movement made the Gwangju Students Independence Movement raise. This movement spread nationwide, leading to continuous movements by March of the next year. Gwangju Secondary School changed their name to Gwangju Jeil High School, which is still their name. In 1954, Gwangju Students‘ Independence Movement Memorial was founded to commemorate the students‘ spirit of independence.
