„The Monument of CFR Heroes“ – „Monumentul Eroilor Ceferiști“
The Monumentul Eroilor Ceferişti (roughly translated as “Monument to Railway Heroes”) stands in the square in front of Gara de Nord, Bucharest’s main railway station. It was erected in the interwar period to commemorate Romanian railway workers and military personnel who lost their lives in World War I (1916–1918).

The monument consists of several bronze figures on a massive granite pedestal. In the center stands an allegorical female figure symbolizing the “fatherland” and handing a laurel wreath to a railway worker. On the sides, sculptures show two railway workers at work and a Romanian soldier saying goodbye to his family. The inscription “EROILOR C.F.R. 1916–1918” is engraved on the front.

The composition was created by the well-known Romanian sculptors CORNEL MEDREA and ION JALEA. The monument was erected between the world wars and still serves as a memorial to the courage and sacrifice of these often overlooked participants in the war. MEDREA was born on 8th March 1888 in Miercurea Sibiului, Romania, and died on 25th July 1964 in Bucharest, Romania. JALEA was born on 19th July 1887 in Casimcea, Romania and died on 7th November 1983 in Bucharest.
