MÉXICO: Streetart Oaxaca de Juárez - Graffiti and Urban Art in Zapotec Lands

Oaxaca de Juárez is located in southern Mexico and is the capital of the state of Oaxaca. The city has a population of about 270.000, but the entire metropolitan area is home to significantly lot more people. The place has a quite long history, which goes back to more than 2.000 years ago, when the Zapotec culture developed in the region with its most important center being Monte Albán, located near the modern-day city. During the Spanish colonial period, Oaxaca became an important administrative and commercial center. Today, the city is best known for its colonial architecture, indigenous culture, and vibrant art scene. This also includes thriving streetart with numerous building walls featuring large-scale murals or smaller wall paintings, that often address social issues, indigenous traditions, local history, or political events.
