LEBANON: Streetart Beirut – Art of Change Project – United Nations Revolution Wall

ART OF CHANGE is a streetart initiative and urban art collective founded in Beirut in 2019. It was created by Lebanese activist and curator IMANE NASREDDINE ASSAF, who is also founder of the NGO Ahla Fawda, and British streetart organiser JASON CAMP. Both met through international streetart networks and developed the idea of transforming Beirut’s city walls into an open-air gallery. Based mainly in the Hamra district of Beirut, the initiative operates as a platform for both local and international artists. Its aim is to activate public space through large-scale murals, promote urban art in Lebanon, and use visual expression to highlight social and political issues.

The project became especially visible during the 2019 Lebanese protests, known as the “October Revolution”, when many of the murals were created as part of so-called “Revolution Walls”. These works reflected demands for political change, social justice, and public frustration, turning the streets of Beirut into a rapidly evolving visual archive of the protests. Within a short period, dozens of large murals were produced, particularly in neighborhood Hamra. “Art of Change” also focuses on broader themes such as women’s rights, social equality, and collective memory. After the 2020 Beirut port explosion, the initiative supported and produced memorial and solidarity artworks addressing destruction, grief, and resilience, including projects like “They Matter”.

In addition to its local work, the collective has collaborated with international street artists from the UK, Europe, and beyond. It also works with cultural organisations and NGOs, positioning itself at the intersection of activism, public space, and contemporary urban art. Overall, “Art of Change” has produced dozens of artworks murals across the whole country of Lebanon, many of which respond directly to their surroundings and the social realities of the area. Here we have artworks especially from the “Revolution Wall” at the ESCWA building of the United Nations, department of Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The colorful pieces are showing motifs of protests against bad governance, corruption and social injustice. Check out as well the individual page for the Beirut Mural Collection with many artworks made as well as part of the Art of Change Project and the seperate page with other Streetart around town.
