South of the city of Aswan on the west bank of the Nile lies the Nubian Village as part of the town of Nagaa Suhayl Gharb. The place is just an astonishing treasure trove of interesting culture and great urban art. Nearly most of the buildings are provided with grandiose creations or simply completely painted as large complete works. For more information and photos about the background of the site and its history, see the separate cultural heritage page (work in progress) for the Nubian Village here on the website. This article is solely about the painting on the walls and its creators.
The style and techniques of the colorful murals are very warm, inviting and positive. Many of the motifs are portraits of famous people from music, poetry or ancient stories, but often the depictions simply show people from the village. Sometimes realistic, sometimes as pop art or even in mosaic style.
Many works present scenarios from the desert or the Nile landscape and some houses are also purely decorated with graphic elements over and over. The typical graffiti lettering is rather absent here, but nevertheless, artistically decorated fonts appear in some corners.
Obviously, the village is also home to many artists and creative visitors, such as ROMA, RAMYTAG, ROBY or MAHA GAMIL, whose beautiful works of art can also be found in many other places in the country.
