CHILE: Streetart Santiago - Barrio Brasil - Huérfanos 2146 / Patricio Bunster Briceño 2146 - MONO GONZALEZ

Given the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état of September 11, in 1973, this block of Huérfanos street in front of Plaza Brasil has just changed its name to that of Patricio Bunster Briceño, a prominent dance choreographer in Chile who was exiled after the coup.

The Víctor Jara House was a cultural center managed by the Víctor Jara Foundation ( @fundacionvictorjara ) in homage to the singer-songwriter, folklorist, social and political activist. Today said foundation is located in another part of Santiago and, unfortunately, those graffiti are gone.

Víctor Jara was arrested the day after September 11, in 1973, by the newly established military dictatorship. Due to his militancy in the Chilean Communist Party, he was tortured and assassinated at the end of September 1973. Just a few days ago, the guilty soldiers were recently convicted and sent to jail. Justice takes time but arrives!

The graffiti shown in portrait position are the work of the BRIGADA RAMONA PARRA ( @brp.chile ) and one of its founders and most prominent muralist, ALEJANDRO “MONO” GONZÁLEZ ( @monogonzalezchile ).

The figure of Víctor Jara, which was painted after the BRP and MONO GONZÁLEZ graffiti, is a mural by LES OEROLES ( @losoberoles ), a group that makes murals with historical and political content.
