CHILE: Streetart Santiago – Protest Graffiti – Socio Cultural Analysis – Power by the Colors!

The marker for this page on the Santiago Map is located at the Plaza Baquedano or „Ground 0“ where the protests started. Protesters wanted to change the name to „Plaza Dignidad“, which means in English „Dignity Square“. On the other hand, Baquedano was a general that fought wars that changed the geography of Chile and made the actual shape of Chile, that is 4,300 km long. He lived in the 1800’s. But the protesters hate anything related to the military due to the period of Pinochet 1973-1989, so they damaged the statue of Baquedano on his horse and they wanted the new name.  –  Salvador Seda

Here we have a collection of graffiti created during the protest period in Santiago. The artworks range from simple sprayed slogans to large colorful artworks. But all of them have a message and therefore this is a collection of Protest Graffiti around the described neighbourhood. The photos were taken by FRANCISCA FERNÁNDEZ, who also wrote her master’s thesis on this topic.
