The Student
This artwork was created by DREW MERRITT during the Muralfestival in 2018. I titled this mural “The Student” because it is located in the middle of the Milton Park neighborhood, sometimes called the McGill Ghetto. Indeed, the prestigious English-speaking McGill University is located not far on a slope of Mount Royal. Obviously, several buildings in the area offer apartments to university students. This naturally influences the demographics of the neighborhood and the atmosphere and businesses in the area. McGill University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Canada. It was founded in 1821 by James McGill, a wealthy Scottish fur trader who wanted Montréal to develop. In the first years of its existence, the courses were given in the Montréal villa of Mr. McGill. McGill University has 12 Nobel Prizes and 3 Pulitzer Prizes among its former students. It regularly ranks among the top 20 universities in the world. Sports such as basketball, American football and ice hockey are said to have been invented or taken off at McGill University. It is really pleasant to go for a walk on the downtown campus of the university to immerse yourself in Montréal´s student life. The campus also hosts the Redpath Museum. This natural science museum housing the university’s collection is free and rather interesting although eclectic. – Patrice Loranger
