Fanny Fanny by CESAR BALDACCINI

The French sculptor César or Cesare Baldaccini was born on 1st January 1921 im Marseille and died on 6th December 1998. César was at the forefront of the Nouveau Réalisme movement with his radical compressions like compacted automobiles, discarded metal, or rubbish art. He did as well creative and innovative expansions with polyurethane foam sculpturing and fantastic representations of animals and insects. After his studies César met Picasso and Germaine Richier in Paris, and lived in the same house as Alberto Giacometti, all of whom influenced his early artwork greatly. During this time César produced his first sculptures made from iron and gypsum. From 1956 César soldered pieces of scrap together to form figurative and semi-abstract sculptures. Under the influence of Nouveau Réalisme, he produced the famous “Compressions dirigées” from 1960, for which César compressed car chassis and metal objects in a metal press.

Sculpture: DALE CHIHULY – Le Soleil – The Sun

A few years ago, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts presented a temporary exhibition dedicated to the American glassmaker Dale Chihuly. A splendor of curves, transparencies, reflections and light. Shortly after the exhibition which caused a stir, the museum launched a popular subscription to acquire Le Soleil. The response from Montrealers was instantaneous. The sculpture was acquired and never left Montreal! Since then, every summer, the thousands of pieces of glass from The Sun are assembled and the work is exhibited outside in front of the museum’s doors. The Sun has become, over time, a symbolic and precious work of art in the hearts of the citizens of our city. – Patrice Loranger
