LEBANON: Streetart Beirut – Graffiti and Urban Art in the Lebanese Capital

Beirut is the capital of Lebanon and is located on the Mediterranean coast. The city is the country’s political, economic, and cultural center, as well as its most important port. Since there has been no official census since 1932, population figures vary significantly depending on the source. For the city proper, figures typically range from around 350.000 to 1.9 million residents, while the Beirut metropolitan area is home to approximately 2.3 to 2.4 million people. This means that about one-third of Lebanon’s population lives in the greater capital area. Beirut is characterized by high urban density, strong cultural diversity, and a history shaped by modernization as well as war, reconstruction, and political crises. Of course you can find a lot of urban art around here, reflecting the cities issues. On this page we have photos from urban artworks across the city, but check out as well the individual page especially for the Mighty Murals and for the Art of Change Project. The following photos were taken by world traveller and streetart lover MAZZANTI.

„The Bag Checkers“  –  DIANA

This passerby just wanted to be in the photo. Why not, of course he’s in it! We don’t know his name, but he’s a local who likes the urban art around the streets, even more when visitors come by and think it’s cool too.

„Stations of the Cross“  –  MARKUS BISSINGER

These works are by the German artist MARKUS BISSINGER and form part of a special Stations of the Cross installation. The connection to Beirut is no coincidence, but rather part of an international art and peace project. The artist, who hails from Heppenheim, Germany, is known for his depictions of the Stations of the Cross on Euro pallets. His style is highly distinctive, featuring clean black lines and flat colors reminiscent of stained glass. MARKUS BISSINGER conceived this Way of the Cross as a “traveling exhibition,” and since Beirut was deeply scarred by the 2020 port explosion and the political situation, panels from this series were brought there as a sign of solidarity and peace. They were hung, for example, on construction fences or walls in predominantly Christian neighborhoods such as Gemmayzeh or Achrafieh to artistically enliven the public space.
