ROMANIA: Streetart Bucharest – Aviatorilor – Piața Arcul de Triumf – Monument Arcul de Triumf – PETRE ANTONESCU, FREDERIC STORCK, ION JALEA & CORNEL MEDREA

The building was erected to commemorate the triumph in World War I. A first predecessor was built in 1878, after the country gained independence, as a temporary wooden structure. In 1922, it was replaced by a larger, also temporary structure made of wood and stucco.

The renowned Romanian musician and composer George Enescu then wrote a satirical letter to the mayor, asking when the capital would finally get a real triumphal arch. The current triumphal arch was designed between 1935 and 1936 by PETRE ANTONESCU, modeled on the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile in Paris, and built in the classical Roman style as a monumental structure.

Finally the ceremonial inauguration took place on the national holiday 1st December 1936. The arch is rectangular in shape with a base measuring 25 × 11.50 meters. The passageway is 11 meters high and 9.50 meters wide. Outstanding sculptors such as FREDERIC STORCK, ION JALEA and CORNEL MEDREA were involved in the design of this monument.
