„Equilibre Tripod“ – „Skewed Balance“
This sculptural installation made of metal was created by the American sculptor ALEXANDER CALDER. Much of his work can be classified as kinetic art and he was one of the first users of the concept of the mobile in artistic works. He was born on July 22nd 1898 in Lawnton, Pennsylvania in the United States and died on November 11th 1976 in New York. This stabile-mobile with a total weight of 3.5 tons and in form of a tripod attached with three painted metal disks was created in 1970.

The artwork had been on another location before and was removed to the park at the Matisse Museum. The city about the artwork: As part of the extension of the Promenade du Paillon, the City of Nice wished to relocate ALEXANDER CALDER’s stabile-mobile, which had been installed on the MAMAC forecourt since the museum’s inauguration in 1990.

For the duration of the works, this masterpiece will be installed on the northern forecourt of the Matisse Museum, in front of the former entrance to the Villa des Arènes. The artist’s work is not unrelated to that of MATISSE, particularly his cut-out gouaches, which also use a vocabulary of simple, colorful forms. At once free and dynamic, they help to animate the surrounding space. When MATISSE met CALDER in 1946, he told him: „You are a Magician“, expressing his admiration.

This monumental abstract work in steel comprises two distinct parts: the stabile, which is a fixed structure, and the mobile, which is a moving element. The stabile part is composed of three large black elements secured by bolts. Balanced on the tip of the structure, the moving part is made up of a large steel pendulum on which blue, yellow and red discs hang.

„I’d like to make Mondrians that move,“ said ALEXANDER CALDER as early as 1930. That quote was named after the famous artist PIET MONDRIAN who was an important Dutch painter of classical modernism who helped shape the styles of Neo-Plasticism, Constructivism and Concrete Art.

In the back you can see the Villa des Arènes, which is an old landslord residency building located in the middle of the park and all around covered with fresco paintings. Just nearby is the famous Matisse Museum, but also the whole park is themed in Jazz musician style, the walkways are named to famous legends and you can find a sculpture of Louis Armstrong and another one of Lionel Hampton. Even the Garbage Bins offer interesting painted urban artworks.
