HENRI MATISSE, or his full name HENRI ÉMILE BENOÎT MATISSE, was a French painter, printmaker, draftsman, and sculptor. Along with Pablo Picasso, he is considered one of the most important artists of classical modernism. MATISSE was born on December 31st 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in France, and died on November 3rd 1954 in Nice.
The museum in Nice presents an extensive selection of his fascinating works, along with background information on the artist’s life. Anyone who enjoys this art should pay this place a visit. MATISSE is an important figure in art history and if you are in Nice, you should check it out, it’s highly recommended.
Around the museum in the park Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez there are several more artwors you should walk by. The whole park is themed in Jazz musician style, the walkways are named to famous legends and you can find a sculpture of Louis Armstrong and another one of Lionel Hampton. In the middle of the park is also the Villa des Arènes with painted frescos around the building and a big metal tripod Installation in front of it. Even the Garbage Bins offer interesting painted urban artworks.

Musée d’Archéologie de Nice
Just next the Matisse Museum is the archaeological museum, the „Musée d’Archéologie de Nice„. It is also worth a visit if you are interested in the thematic. And if you’re already around that place anyway, why not take a look there too. This site was also chosen because of the amphitheater of Cimiez, the „Arènes de Cimiez“, of which the foundations are still preserved. Also check out the relaxed jazz-themed park „Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez“, with paths named after musicians and tribute statues to Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton. Even the Garbage Bins offer interesting painted urban artworks.
