MAR DE COBO
Mar de Cobo is a town within the Partido de Mar Chiquita, in the southeast of the province of Buenos Aires. The Mar de Cobo cluster includes the districts of La Caleta, Parque Lago, and La Baliza. It is a destination that is located 25 kilometers from Mar del Plata, the largest coastal city on the Atlantic Coast of the province of Buenos Aires.
It is a forest reserve characterized by its small-town lifestyle, where we can find very friendly residents, with a lot of tranquility, security, and cleanliness. The beaches are extensive and clean. Its main attraction is the imposing groves of poplars, pines, elms, cypresses, and lambertias, which are home to numerous species of birds. Its curious streets were designed in a semicircle, and that is why they all begin and end at Avenue Manuel Cobo, which leads to the sea. Before entering the reserve and still on the road, a beautiful wooden sign painted in yellow letters tells us the main characteristic of that place. And after advancing a few meters, we find the welcome sign to Mar de Cobo framed by the beautiful trees that characterize this place.
Throughout the tour of the city, we will find signs with the same aesthetics as those that welcome us, which will remind us of the importance of caring for the environment and our mother earth, “Pachamama” as we Latinos like to call it.
Mar de Cobo dazzles above all those who enjoy a meditative and relaxing lifestyle in a wildlife setting, and especially for those who love to watch the sunrise over the sea: dreamlike images that will be forever etched in their retinas and their hearts.
At the main entrance to the beaches, we are greeted by a three-dimensional sign with the letters that make up the name of the town and that have been intervened by artist PAOLA ZECCHILLO aka POLA.
Walks along its extensive coast during sunset also offer beautiful postcards.
Walking through its magical streets, we find constructions of houses with very different styles that clearly show us the time of their construction. That is why we will see vacation-style houses or forest-style houses intermingled with more modern and sophisticated architectures, all these modern constructions have beautiful panoramic views.
The Main Square of Mar de Cobo has a special charm. It is a large space surrounded by trees, plants, and children’s games, and it is a typical meeting point where people spend quality time. There we will find the Artisans’ Fair, with commercial stalls selling typical and regional products, the Integrated Tourist Parador, and in the vicinity of the square we will be able to see schools, the church, the first aid room, businesses, and accommodations.
The streets that make up the square of the Main Square are intervened with Urban Art. Thus, we can see a wall with a tribute to the ARA San Juan, a submarine lost in the depths of the sea in the town of Mar del Plata; walls with messages of popular wisdom, very curious and encouraging, such as the one we find in the Q’si Restaurant, which tells us “It has been aerodynamically proven that it is impossible for the bumblebee to fly because of its size, weight, and body … but he doesn’t know”, or interventions from a program carried out in June 2022, called “Protectors of Nature and Biodiversity”, within the framework of the “Environmental Oath” project in which students from the Secondary School of Education No. 5 promised to take care of the environment. And that day a mural was inaugurated in the school, created by the plastic artist AGOS CORALLO aka CORAL ARTE, who dyed the school walls with the native flora and fauna. And the artistic interventions do not stop and are not limited only to the walls of the beautiful town, but if one day we arrive very early to the beaches, we may be surprised by a fascinating artistic piece made in the sand, like the one we show you below.
We return to the name of the Q’si Restaurant that we mentioned earlier only to share with you some magical corners that adorn the space that the restaurant occupies and we leave you here some beautiful images so that you can check for yourselves.
Due to the city’s low light pollution, one of its nighttime attractions is to contemplate the stars and constellations, when its romantic open and clear skies allow it.
LA CALETA
La Caleta is a coastal town in the Mar Chiquita district, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Its main attraction is its beaches, and on its southern border is the famous Los Cueros creek, which flows into the ocean and gives the town its name. La Caleta and La Baliza make up the conglomerate of Mar de Cobo, which had 760 inhabitants in 2010. In the creek, we can see sea turtles, capybaras, fish, ducks, and other wild animals, and very close to this site is the restaurant Peixe, which offers home-cooked seafood cuisine, offering us the catch of the day made by its owner.
And is it possible for a restaurant to have any other attraction besides delicious seafood cuisine? The answer is undoubtedly YES. The excellent service and cordiality of its employees, a sensational beer to accompany our meals, and enjoying a space that contributes to the environment. In its construction, a large amount of sustainable materials have been used: its tables are made with recovered doors and in every corner visitors can find recycled materials. Are you still not convinced by the proposal? Then keep reading because we are sure that the following Peixe characteristic will win you over: it is a Pet Friendly place! Which means you can bring your pet with you to enjoy the place and its warm environment.
PARQUE LAGO
This place welcomes its visitors with beautiful three-dimensional letters that form its name, which have been artistically intervened. If you are able to visit this site on a beautiful sunny day with fluffy clouds, such as the day we had, you will find a contrast that will be perfect for the composition of a photograph.
The letters are mounted on a natural structure that reminds us, at every step and with magnificent handcrafted signs, that our main priority should be to Care for Our Nature.
Near these structures is a recycled installation that uses a truck tire and plastic bottles, donated by the nearby Family Pop‘s store. The installation was also a tribute to the Argentine National Soccer Team for winning its third World Cup championship in December 2022.
On our way to the lake, we can be surprised by the visit of wild animals. On our way, we came across a horse that was grazing, but when it saw us, it instantly came over to greet us. We were convinced that, if it could, it would get into our vehicle because its entire large head entered through our window to show us signs of affection!
And when we arrived at the lake, the welcome from the geese and ducks is no less: they love to see visitors who come to see them. That’s why if you don’t get out of your vehicle right away to show them your interest, they will surround your car until you have no choice. And as soon as you step on the ground, they will celebrate around you by spreading their large wings, flapping their wings, and executing beautiful choruses of honking, almost like a pre-assembled and well-rehearsed musical piece.
PLAZOLETA DANIEL TINAYRE
A magical space in Parque Lago stands in this square, that has the complicity of bringing adults back to unique moments and perfectly identifiable with several stages of their lives, especially childhood. This colorful square exhibits on its white walls the tribute works that the renowned muralist HERNÁN SALAZAR made to several Argentine cartoonists, representing their most characteristic and beloved characters.
This parador was inaugurated in 2008 and bears the name of the deceased son of Mrs. Mirtha Legrand, a famous Argentine actress and television host who donated that land to the Municipality. In 2011, a municipal annex was established at the site to provide tourism and cultural services. Walking through this open-air exhibition as visitors, we will come across, from right to left, Inodoro Pereyra and his faithful companion Mendieta, a Pampas gaucho who sometimes reflected while talking to his mongrel dog, two of the most endearing creatures of the cartoonist Roberto Fontanarrosa.
To the left of them is the adorable, funny, daring, and intellectual Mafalda, daughter of the humorist Quino, whose comic strip emerged in the mid-1960s and early 1970s but has continued to be relevant to the present day. This is the reason why generations and generations of Argentines feel identified with her. Continuing the exhibit, we find an endearing character: a Patagonian Indian chief again accompanied by his adorable animal companion, fused in a fun image that denotes their adventures,adorably recounted and drawn by Dante Quinterno. They are Paturuzú and his fierce horse Pampero, and this indigenous character was a source of inspiration for important international cartoonists, such as René Gosciny.
On the front wall of the square is the tribute made by HERNÁN SALAZAR to the cartoonist García Ferré, creator of the beloved character Hijitus with his fellow adventurers. In front of the mural work, we find two life-size figures, which the sculptor Pablo Irrgang created in honor of two characters very dear to Argentine popular culture: Mafalda and Larguirucho, creations of the cartoonists Quino and Manuel García Ferrer, respectively. To the left of this installation, we see a national icon, the endearing Clemente, a creation of the cartoonist Caloi that became a classic of Argentine comics published daily (and for over 40 years) in a newspaper with great national circulation and characterized by making political and economic criticisms but also representing one of the most popular passions in the country: football.
Next, we find a tribute to El Eternauta, by Francisco Solano López, a serialized science fiction comic considered one of the most important in Argentina and all of Latin America. Next to it is the image of Matías with his cat, a naughty, funny, and adorablely naive child drawn by Sendra. And finally, to end the tour of the square’s installation, we are surprised by two loving characters from the Uruguayan cartoonist Tabaré, Diógenes and the Hobo, which has been published uninterruptedly since 1977.
