TAIWAN: Taipei - Streetart Ximending - Cinema Park, America Street & Tattoo Street

Ximending is one of Taipei’s most energetic and colorful neighborhoods, famous for its lively youth culture, trendy shopping streets, and vibrant entertainment scene. Often referred to as the “Harajuku of Taipei,” the district blends modern pop culture with historic charm and attracts locals as well as visitors from around the world. Located in Taipei’s Wanhua District, Ximending is a pedestrian-friendly area filled with boutiques, cinemas, cafés, street performers, and an incredible variety of Taiwanese street food. The name “Ximen” means “West Gate,” while “ding” comes from a Japanese word meaning “district” or “area,” reflecting the neighborhood’s history during the Japanese colonial era, when it developed outside Taipei’s old western gate. Today, the district is easily accessible via MRT Exit 6 at Ximen Metro Station and remains one of the city’s most popular meeting points.

Among the most iconic spots in Ximending is America Street, a narrow alley known for its graffiti-covered walls, urban fashion stores, sneaker shops, and hip-hop influences. The street has long been associated with skate culture and underground music, giving it a distinctly international atmosphere that contrasts with Taipei’s more traditional neighborhoods. Nearby, the lively Cinema Park serves as an open public space where street dancers, musicians, and performers gather throughout the day and night, surrounded by awesome graffiti and streetart pieces. Another unique attraction is Tattoo Street, a small but famous lane lined with tattoo studios and alternative fashion shops, popular among younger generations and creative subcultures. Also here you can find fantastic urban art on the facades.

Ximending is also home to landmarks such as the historic Red House, one of Taipei’s most recognizable cultural buildings and a center for art, design, and LGBTQ+ culture. The district’s neon-lit streets, endless shopping opportunities, cosplay culture, and dynamic nightlife make it comparable to Tokyo’s Shibuya or Shinjuku districts. Creative local groups, especially the CITYMARX collective, contribute with murals to the artistic and contemporary identity of the area. ANO started his graffiti career in 1999 and has been working extensively with famous brands and in art exhibitions in Shanghai, China and Taipei, Taiwan. Pixels and animals are often the key elements of his creation. In this particular commission for citizenM Hotel in Taipei, he creates a mural based on the memory of his childhood, when Wan-Z-Biao paper cards and games were popular. The mural fully reflects the diversity and range of cultures in Taiwan, as well as the innocence and happy childhood that once existed in one’s life. – ANO
