SWITZERLAND: Basel – Exhibiton Fair – Art Basel – International Venue since 1970

The ART BASEL is considered one of the most prestigious and influential art fairs in the world and plays a central role in the international art market as well as in art theory discourse. It was founded in 1970 by Basel gallery owners ERNST BEYERLE, TRUDL BRUCKNER and BALZ HILT with the aim of establishing a fair of the highest quality that would clearly distinguish itself from purely commercial events. Since then, it has been held annually in Basel and has continuously developed into a global benchmark for modern and contemporary art.

Every year, the venue brings together several hundred selected galleries from over 40 countries, showcasing works from the early 20th century to the present day. Both world-renowned artists and young, up-and-coming talents are represented. The artistic spectrum is deliberately broad and includes painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, performance, installation, new media, and digital art forms. As a result, the fair reflects current developments, social issues, and technological changes within the art world.

A key feature of Art Basel is its clear structure into curated sectors. The “Galleries” section forms the heart of the fair, while “Unlimited” provides space for large-format, often spectacular works that go beyond the classic fair formats. “Statements” offers young artists an international platform, “Feature” is dedicated to art-historical projects, and “Parcours” integrates site-specific works into the public space of the city of Basel. The program is complemented by ‘Conversations’ and “Talks,” in which artists, curators, collectors, and theorists discuss current issues in the art world.

Also graffiti and streetart are playing an increasingly important role in the context of the fair, even though they historically emerged outside the classical art market. Urban art forms that specifically incorporate urban space and appeal to new visitor groups are particularly visible in the supporting program and in public projects such as the “Parcours” sector. International street artists use facades, squares, and temporary installations to address social, political, or cultural issues and question the boundaries between high art and everyday urban culture.

Graffiti and streetart have also made their way into the exhibition halls themselves. Renowned galleries present works by artists who have their roots in urban spaces but now work on canvas, in sculpture, or in multimedia. As a result, street art is increasingly being museumized and integrated into the art market without completely losing its original character of directness and social criticism. In the context of the event, these positions are exemplary of the transformation of contemporary art and the fair’s openness to new forms of expression and target groups.

The huge fair attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world, transforming Basel into a vibrant center of art. Museums, off-spaces, and galleries in the region participate with special exhibitions and events, creating an intense exchange between the local and international art scenes. In addition to its cultural influence, the fair also has great economic significance for the city and the region.

Beyond Basel, Art Basel now has an international presence. With Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel Hong Kong, and Art Basel Paris, it has expanded its concept to important global art centers. It pursues the same standards of quality in all editions, thereby having a lasting impact on trends, artists‘ careers, and developments in the global art market.
