Old Hunter – ???? ?????

Although not all Skopje residents were hunters, sooner or later they all gathered in front of „Lovec“. It was once a hunting and fishing shop, located in the city center, so that it would be easily accessible to those who, in their free time, with a rifle or a cane in hand, would exchange the city for a forest, field, river or lake. Here the hunters and their fishing friends would renew their clothes with green leather jackets, feathered hats, reeds, bait, fishing rods. But, much more often, it was here that Skopje fathers would drop off Skopje mothers with their little Skopje children in their cars to buy them new clothes from „Beba“, and Skopje taxi drivers would always wait for their customers here.

Of all the surrounding shops, due to its uniqueness, it was the name of „Lovec“ that became the name of the place. The shop is long gone, but the name has remained. Just as the „Balkan“ Mill, the Turkish Idadija, the Mala Stanica railway station are long gone, there is neither „Kocka“ on the square, nor „Record“. The former shops, companies and buildings have disappeared, but the names have remained. Because Skopje needs its city toponyms. The city remembers and preserves the names of the places where Skopje residents waited for each other, saw each other off, met each other, made friends, lived.

Skopje will also preserve „Lovec“, because it is Skopje, part of its tradition and urban geography, and part of the identity and memories of Skopje residents. The artwork was created in 2019 by the artist LJUBIŠA KAMENJAROV and curated by the CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER or CAC for short, with the support of the municipality of the Centar district in Skopje.
