Tribute to Alexander the Great – Alexander III of Macedonien
The huge monument on Macedonia Square consists of a twelve metre bronze statue with Alexander as a warrior on a horse which is installed on top of a ten meters pedestal. Around the pillar there are additional warrior sculptures defending the bottom, which is surrounded by a fountain. On the edges of the water basin there are four lions standing and spitting out the water, also on the tableau around the fountain are four more lions guarding the site. The monument was created by the artist VALENTINA STEVANOVSKA and installed as part of the Skopje 2014 infrastructure project. It received funding from the government of the Republic of Macedonia (currently North Macedonia), which was led by the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party at that time. The official aim was to enhance the classical aesthetic of the capital Skopje, while also improving its earthquake resilience. Approximately 20 buildings and more than 40 monuments were constructed throughout the city.
