The bronze monument depicts Đorđe Petrović (1768–1817), better known as Karađorđe or “Black George” (Crni Đorđe). He was the leader of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire, which began in 1804. Karađorđe is regarded as a central figure in Serbian history and one of the pioneers of the modern Serbian state.
The sculpture was created by the Serbian sculptor Sreten Stojanović (1898–1960). Born in Prijedor, he studied sculpture in Vienna and Paris and became one of the most prominent sculptors in Yugoslavia during the 20th century. In addition to his artistic career, he was a professor and rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade and a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The monument was cast in bronze in 1955 but was not installed in Karađorđev Park in Podgorica until 1968, eight years after the sculptor’s death. Today, it commemorates both an important historical figure and a significant artist in Serbian and Yugoslav sculpture.
More photos of the red metal installation by MILIVOJE MIŠKO BABOVIĆ are on the page Karađorđe Park 2.
