Tribute to Ljubica Popović
Ljubica Popović, or Љубица Поповић in Cyrillic, was a Yugoslav partisan who took part in Yugoslavia’s anti-fascist liberation struggle during World War II. She belonged to a generation of young people who joined the resistance against the occupying powers and their allies.

She was born on 9th January 1921, in Medun near Podgorica and already from a young age, she was active in the Communist youth movement and advocated for the rights of female workers. During the occupation of Yugoslavia, she organized the resistance and supported the recruitment of young people into partisan units.

Her life ended in 1942, and she is remembered as a symbol of courage, self-sacrifice, and resistance against fascism. According to the digital memorial archive “Narodni heroji Crne Gore,” Ljubica Popović died on the night of 8th to 9th December 1942 in the village of Orahovo near Podgorica. She and two fellow fighters were ambushed by Chetniks and, while attempting to break out of the encirclement, she was seriously wounded in the leg. They took refuge in a hut, which the attackers eventually set on fire. Not wanting to fall alive into the hands of the enemy, she was shot by her wounded comrade-in-arms, Radislav Božović, in accordance with a prior agreement. He then took his own life as well.

There are conflicting accounts regarding the exact date of her death: Some reference works cite 11th June 1942. The Montenegrin Memorial Archive and a biographical account, however, cite 8th/9th December 1942 and describe the circumstances in greater detail. In 1949, she was posthumously awarded the title “People’s Heroine of Yugoslavia”.

The children’s day care center „Ljubica Popović Kindergarten“ was named in her honor, also in the southwestern part of the center, a bust of her was placed on a lawn as a memorial to this great woman.
