„La laicité au fil des saisons“ – „Secularism through the seasons“
The preschool named „École maternelle publique Les Mûriers“ was founded in 1979 and bears the name of a tree or shrub, some of which are cultivated for their fruit, blackberries, or for their leaves, which are used for silkworm breeding, known as sericulture. Mulberry trees should not be confused with brambles, whose fruit is similar in appearance and taste and is commonly called blackberries.
The discovery in China of the technique of silkworm breeding dates back to 4500-3000 BCE. The secret of silk production was kept for two millennia. The Koreans, the Japanese, and then the Indians eventually discovered this secret, which became known throughout the Mediterranean basin during the 6th century. It is at the caterpillar stage that the insect produces a single thread of raw silk with which it makes a cocoon.
This thread measures between 800 and 1,500 meters long. In the south of France, the house where silkworms are raised is called a magnanerie, from the name „magnan“ given to the worm. In Nice, it gave its name to the river and the Magnan district where sericulture was practiced. In 1891, during the masked ball of the Paris Carnival, the sheets of paper perforated with small round holes used for silkworm rearing were used as projectiles. This launched the fashion for paper confetti.
