ETHIOPIA: Streetart Bahir Dar – Urban Art at Lake Tana in the Amhara Region

Bahir Dar is a major city in northwestern Ethiopia and serves as the administrative capital of the Amhara Region. Situated on the southern shore of Lake Tana, the country’s largest lake, it is home to an estimated population of around 500.000 people. The city has a long history as a regional center connected to trade, religion, and transportation, but its development accelerated during the twentieth century. Bahir Dar is best known for its proximity to several of the country’s most significant natural and cultural attractions, like the historic monasteries located on islands and peninsulas of Lake Tana, many of which preserve centuries-old religious art and manuscripts. Another major attraction is the Blue Nile Falls, a large waterfall located southwest of the city. Of course you can also find great urban art around the streets. Especially in May 2026 the artist YABSRA AYELE and his crew created a super long colorful wall scenery.

„Transformation from traditional to modern“  –  May 2026

Participating artist YABSRA AYELE about the project: „Over the past three weeks in May 2026, my team and I completed a large mural project in my hometown, Bahir Dar. It covers approximately 600 square meters, making it the biggest mural project I have worked on so far. Together with my crew, we created something very special. The mural tells the story of Bahir Dar’s transformation from a traditional city to a modern one, showing the journey of the past 50 years.“
