CANADA: Streetart Montréal – Sainte-Hélène Island – Trois Disques – ALEXANDER CALDER

L’Homme  –  The Man  (1967)

This famous sculpture by ALEXANDER CALDER is installed on Île Sainte-Hélène and called “L’Homme”, means “The Man”. It was created and delivered by ALEXANDER CALDER on the occasion of the 1967 Universal Exhibition held in Montreal. Île Sainte-Hélène et Île Notre-Dame were entirely created in the middle of the St. Lawrence River to host the exhibition, which was a great success and which allowed Montreal to establish its international reputation.

Today, the islands are still a park very popular with Montrealers and tourists. You can admire works of art, but also former pavilions of the exhibition. That of France hosts, for example, the casino of Montreal. You can admire the old port and downtown Montreal and its skyscrapers across the river from the square where the sculpture is installed. The formula 1 track of the Montreal Grand Prix is also installed on the islands. I hate the Formula 1 event, but the rest of the year the track is a great closed circuit for cyclists, runners and rollerbladers. A half day on Île Sainte Hélène and ïle Notre-Dame is really a must during a stay in Montreal!  –  Patrice Loranger

The ONF Archives have several videos from that time and put them online for the 50th anniversary of the Expo 67. During this memorable event in the history of Montreal and Canada you could take a minirail through the iconic geodesic dome built by architect Buckminster Fuller. There are over 300 unedited shots, many in stunning color, available at www.onf.ca/archives.

And here is an olf advertising aimed at the American market from the archives of the City of Montreal.
