CANADA: Streetart Montréal – Griffintown – 890 Rue Saint Maurice – JAUME PLENSA

La Source  – Entrée de Ville Bonaventure

This here is one of my favorite public sculptures in Montréal made by artist JAUME PLENSA. In the distance, behind the work of art, you can see one of the last grain elevators still active in Montreal. It currently belongs to the ADM mill and it used to belong to Farine five roses flour. The giant neon sign at the top of the building is one of Montréal’s visual symbols. As you enter at night via the Champlain Bridge, you can see this red illuminated sign in a striking way. At the time, the sign indicated Farine five roses flour.

In the 1970s, Quebecers elected a sovereignist political party. One of the first gestures of this party was to legislate on language. He wanted to protect the prevalence of the French language in Quebec. Since then, the sign has been modified and the Flour mention has been withdrawn. Entering Montreal by the bridge, henceforth, everyone knows that they are entering a French-speaking metropolis. Politics is sometimes more symbolic than effective since French and English speakers are almost neck and neck in Montréal today.

The great artwork was commissioned by the City of Montréal’s Public Art Bureau for 375th Anniversary in 2017 with the patrons France Chrétien Desmarais and André Desmarais. It is made out of painted stainless steel with a size of 1000 x 699 x 735 cm. – Patrice Loranger
