Hochelaga-Maisonneuve commonly called HoMa or Hochlag by Montrealers is a French-speaking working-class neighborhood in the east of the city. Hochelaga and Maisonneuve are two former municipalities that were annexed to Montreal in the 1910s. The name Hochelaga is of Aboriginal origin. It comes from the Iroquoian village which was installed at the foot of Mount Royal when the Frenchman Jacques-Cartier arrived in 1535. The meaning of the word is disputed, but some believe that it is a derivative of the word Iroquois Osheaga which can be translated as : big rapids. This may refer to the proximity of the Lachine Rapids not far from the site of the Aboriginal village. – Patrice Loranger
