Tribute to singer Alys Robi
Alys Robi, whose real name is Marie Alice Albertine Robitaille, was the first internationally renowned Quebec singer. She began her career at a very young age in the 1930s, but she enjoyed success during the Second World War, first in Europe, then in the United States. At the end of the 1940s, she was involved in an automobile accident during which she suffered a severe concussion. She returned to Quebec and was hospitalized. Mental health problems arise. She was interned in a psychiatric institute and underwent severe treatment, including lobotomy. After five years, she leaves the hospital system. She tries to revive her career, but it is too late. The taboos and prejudices surrounding mental health prevent her from winning back the public. Alys Robi will have her marriage annulled for domestic violence and will suffer from mental disorders until her death in 2011. Alys Robi will be made Lady by Elisabeth II and will receive the title of Chevalier de la Pléiade awarded by the assembly of French-speaking parliamentarians for its contribution to Francophone culture.
