“Maurice Richard”
Maurice Rocket Richard (1921-2000) is something like a national hero for Quebecers. He was born and lived all his life in the Ahuntsic district. As captain of the great Montréal Canadiens team, he was, in his time, the best ice hockey player. Maurice Richard represents, in a way, a metaphor for the fate of French Canadians. A loser who rolls up his sleeves and who, by dint of courage, succeeds in sublimating himself and forgetting his difficulties to achieve his dreams. In 1955, a riot broke out during a match in the old Montréal forum. Maurice Richard was then suspended for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs by the president of the national hockey league (Clarence Campbell) for assaulting a referee when the latter had spent his time tolerating the aggression of opposing players towards him. Campbell, to add fuel to the fire, had come from Toronto to watch the game in Montréal. The partisans, taking the presence of this English speaker from Toronto as an insult, had shouted at him and a tear gas canister thrown by an individual had started the riot which continued all night long in the streets of Montréal. The next day, Maurice Richard addressed the citizens to ask for a return to calm. The damage was done and some do not hesitate to refer to this event as the starting point of the Quiet Revolution which would transform Quebec at all levels in the following decades. Either way, the event added to the legend and the idol of a nation was born. – Patrice Loranger
