Nelson Mandela
The brand new mural is a homage to Nelson Mandela’s visit to Montreal in 1990. The artwork is painted on a wall of Union United Church founded in 1907 by black women from the Petite-Bourgogne neighborhood which was the concentration of Montreal’s black community at the time. These women reacted to the fact that they were refused in the “white churches” of their denomination in their neighborhood.
Besides Nelson Mandela who gave a speech there, the jazzmen Oliver Jones and Oscar Peterson, living and inventing their Jazz in the district, attended the small church regularly. Oliver Jones even gave his first jazz show in the basement there. – Patrice Loranger
