Center Street is the main commercial artery of Pointe-Saint-Charles. It appears for the first time on a map in 1861. Initially, the street is marked by the industrialization of the sector. Several families of French-Canadian and Irish workers settled there. The perpendicular Shearer Street separates the two groups. Irish to the east, French-speaking to the west. The street declined in the early 1960s with the closing of the Lachine Canal, not far away, and the disappearance of the factories.
Today the street is commercial and residential. The population of the neighborhood has changed and is essentially French-speaking. A trend towards the gentrification of the whole sector is underway. Nevertheless, the neighborhood remains pleasant with a working-class feel, which I really like. One of my favorite typical neighborhoods in Montreal. – Patrice Loranger
