CANADA: Streetart Montréal – Montréal Nord – 11813 Boulevard Saint Gertrude – SOPHIE WILKINS

Sainte-Gertrude Primary School

Montreal-North is the place of residence of the largest Haitian community in Canada. This former municipality attached to the city of Montreal in 2002 has a very bad reputation. In fact, for the past thirty years or so, the borough has often been considered the most dangerous in Montreal.

Poverty is omnipresent and the usual social problems that accompany it like drug trafficking, street gangs, and violence are listed in the neighborhood. However, several mutual aid organizations are present on the ground and people of good will are trying to create neighborhood life and multiply positive initiatives.

The mural made by artist SOPHIE WILKINS on the wall of the playground of the Sainte-Gertrude primary school is an example of these initiatives aimed at creating a pleasant environment for children, among other things.  –  Patrice Loranger
