Saisons Montréalaises
Here are photos from a series of murals on the theme of Montreal’s four seasons. They are painted on the walls of several buildings that are part of a low-cost social housing complex called: “Les Habitations Jeanne-Mance”.
The complex was built in 1961 when the city of Montreal had observed for a decade, following a commission responsible for studying the quality of housing in the city, a marked deterioration in the quality and sanitation of the rental stock. At the time, the project had caused a stir and sowed controversy. Some saw it favorably on a social level, others thought that it would slow down the development of downtown Montreal by grabbing land in very good locations. The supporters of the project won and construction took place.
At the end of the 1990s, the site had become badly known. Poverty, drug trafficking, violence raged there. From 2006, a vast renovation plan for the complex, combined with greening the sector and the installation of leisure infrastructure, changed the situation. The murals presented are part of the artistic component of this effort to restore vigor and appeal to the sector. These initiatives have work and the neighborhood is once again peaceful and pleasant to the delight of residents. – Patrice Loranger
The shown artworks are at Boulevard de Maisonneuve number 143 with the green and pink park mural, at number 255 with the winter scenery and at number 270 with the red park mural. The project was curated by MU.
