Garage – Henri Bourassa
Let’s talk a bit about Henri Bourassa. Born in 1868, died in 1952, he was an important journalist and politician in French Canada and he was a staunch defender of Canada’s independence from England. He also defended the language rights of French Canadians, opposed conscription during the First World War, but opposed the voting rights of women. Like what, nothing and no one is ever perfect. He is the founder in 1910 of the newspaper Le Devoir which is still published today in paper and electronic version. This newspaper is one of the major French-speaking press organs in Quebec and still has a nationalist editorial line in favor of the defense of the French fact in America.
I end by mentioning that Boulevard Henri-Bourassa is one of the main east-west traffic axes in the north of Montreal. This boulevard crosses different neighborhoods such as Ahuntsic, which is partly plush, and Montréal-Nord, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Canada. Economic disparities, like in many other cities around the world, are clearly visible. A car ride on Henri-Bourassa is rich in lessons at this level. – Patrice Loranger
