El Angel
Fredy Villanueva was a young refugee born in Honduras and living with his family in the multi-ethnic Montreal-North neighborhood. In August 2008, he was arrested by the police while playing dice in a parking lot with a few friends. His brother, Dany Villanueva is present. He is a member of a street gang and has a criminal record for various petty crimes unlike Fredy who has a clean criminal record. The intervention goes wrong when Dany advances in a threatening manner towards one of the police officers. Shots are fired and Fredy falls under the bullets. Dead. The media seize the case, facts are distorted. Several riots take place. The Montreal-North community is mobilizing, asking for calm to mourn Fredy. Several years later, the bond of confinement has still not been re-established between the community and the authorities. Fredy remains a symbol of the injustices and violences suffered by people belonging to minority and ethnic groups. RIP. – Patrice Loranger
