Mordecai Richler
This great artwork was made by DOMINIQUE DESBIENS as a tribute to Mordecai Richler (1931-2001), who was a Montreal writer of Jewish origin born in the Mile End district a few steps from the current mural. He is the author of ten novels, several essays and screenplays. Lover of controversy, he often strove to criticize the failings of his community, of the English Canadian majority and especially of his French-speaking fellow citizens of Quebec.
He attacked, in particular, the linguistic laws of Quebec and the Quebec sovereignist movement. He won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1990 and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2001, shortly before his death.
The building on which the mural appears houses the Microbrasserie Dieu du Ciel! One of the very first microbreweries in Quebec, it brews excellent beers including one with pepper which is delicious. Definitely a place to visit for hop lovers. – Patrice Loranger
