Santa Maria, or with full name „Santa Maria da Boca do Monte“, is a city in southern Brazil, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with a population of around 280.000 inhabitants. It was founded in 1797 and initially developed as a military outpost during border conflicts between Portugal and Spain. Over time, the city grew in importance due to its strategic position as a transportation hub and the establishment of educational institutions, especially the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, one of the country’s leading universities. Historically, its role in the regional railway network also shaped its development, earning it the nickname “Heart of Rio Grande.” Notable sights include the impressive Catedral Metropolitana de Santa Maria, which stands out for its distinctive architecture, as well as Parque Itaimbé, a green oasis in the city center. Another cultural highlight is the Theatro Treze de Maio, one of the oldest theaters in Brazil, reflecting the city’s rich history and vibrant cultural life. Of course you can also find urban artworks in the streets. The following photos were photographed by world traveller CHRIS AMES.
