Les Filles du Roy
This magnificent mural painted by artist ANNIE HAMEL with a size around 2000 square feet commemorates the 350th anniversary of the arrival of the first 36 Filles du Roy in New France in 1663. It is also a tribute to all the women of Quebec. The King of France, wanting to stimulate the population of his North American colony, had decided to endow young girls to send them to New France to take a husband. In fact, at that time, the colony was still focused on resources, in particular the furs traded with the natives, was sorely lacking in women. During this time, the British colonies to the south were rapidly populating and becoming a threat to the French colony.
During a few years, several arrivals of Filles du Roy followed one another. Some arrived in Montréal and were lodged for a few months in the house of Marguerite Bourgeoys and the Notre-Dame congregation which still exists not far from the mural. After this course where the young girls learned the basics of a good wife, marriages were agreed and the young girls went to settle on a land with their husbands and found a family. These few hundred courageous and devoted women are, in a way, the Mothers of the Quebec nation. – Patrice Loranger
The exact location of the mural is on a building of the St. Gabriel Elementary School in 600 Dublin Street, but it is on the backside of building which is along Wellington Street.
